I'm just ranting about stupid shit about Izumi. This isn't like Critical Literary Analysis. Also I'm rude and swear a lot in this

Rereading Portrait makes me always think about how Izumi talked about how he'd get a bunch of (material) things from his parents "before he could even ask for anything," and I feel like if your interpretation of that is "he's such a spoiled brat. he gets everything he wants. his life is so perfect," you're just actually incorrect. objectively.

I don't know how much people say it about Izumi in particular but it's just an argument I see a lot in general and I think it's fucking stupid.

And I'm not going to play Trauma Olypmics with the Enstars characters because all those bitches are fucking insane and have insane backstories. I'm not comparing Izumi's upbringing to everyone else because being stabbed in the gut is better than half of their upbringings. That isn't a fair comparison.

Being given a bunch of material gifts that you didn't ask for does not mean your upbringing was perfect and you're an ungrateful brat. Izumi is an Ungrateful Brat in a lot of ways and he's a complete jackass, I'm not saying he isn't, but it's not related to material gifts.

His parents are Insane, and I have a whole post about it. His genuine best interests aren't in mind. If they were, they wouldn't have shoved him in child modelling and ballet. I know he grew to enjoy both of these activities and in the end they benefited the careers he went into, but he's not a healthy or well-adjusted person. He is Obsessed with being loved and praised, and he has a blatant eating disorder and even if you don't believe it's full blown, he at the very least has very concerning disordered eating (also have a post about that).

Only semi-related, but with the need to be praised and loved, Arashi and Akiomi also have that. They all have a very specific/near verbatim way of talking about it that makes me think part of it comes from the agencies they were in.

But anyways, his parents put him into 2 questionable industries, especially when he's mentioned his ballet teacher being "dehumanising." He's said they treated him like a doll and he just went with whatever they wanted. And yes, it helped him in the end and he enjoyed it, but parents should have their kids best interests in mind even if there's something they enjoy. Like I would've loved to eat nothing but strawberries my whole life, but my guardians didn't let me because That's Not Healthy.

The one genuine want he had was to stay in an agency with Makoto, and you can argue whether or not it was "in his best interest" because they transferred him to 'help his career' but he just wanted a friend and his parents first reaction was No because then Mama and Papa's little doll won't be praised and loved as much. Like he's implied to be ostracised in the modelling agency because his parents are batshit (he is also unpleasant but that's not the reason Arashi gives Akiomi for why he should stay away from him and Makoto).

Anyway, I don't think Izumi's upbringing was perfect and I still think his relationship with his parents are whack. Yes, his parents love him. Yes, they technically helped the careers he ended up in. Yes, he got a bunch of toys and shit and goes on vacations with them. But they did not prepare him to be well-adjusted, they did not put him in healthy situations, they do not intervene with his eating issues, they encourage his bad behaviours, and a bunch of shiny toys he didn't even ask for will never make up for that.
